In 2005 Sky Chemicals, became interested in hospital infection control. Reports at the time were full of news of outbreaks of Clostridium Difficile (C-Diff), Noro Virus, Ecoli, and MRSA, branded super bugs which were causing increased hospital deaths, extended stays and temporary ward closures. So we began the quest to find a reliable, effective and environmentally sound way to control these harmful pathogens.

With the help of highly experienced chemists from the industry, our research soon began to take a closer look at peracitic acid. Futher investigations, and discussions with microbiologists, research departments, disinfectant, hygiene and cleaning experts confirmed their findings: peracitic acid was indeed a powerful disinfectant, capable of killing all known microorganisms.

Tetraacetylethylenediamine (TAED) and sodium percarbonate are stable chemicals which react in water to produce peracetic acid. Inherently peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine dioxide and sodium hypochlorite are unstable due to their highly oxidising reactivity.

Creating peracetic acid through an aqueous chemical reaction protects the unstable chemical for the occasion when it is needed, this allows Peracide tablets to be stored for up to 2 years.

Peracetic acid has been known as a high-level disinfectant for many years. The high level of oxidation produces a powerful action which disrupts and kills a wide spectrum of microorganisms.

Whilst the mode of action is disputed academically, current research has shown that peracetic acid disrupts and ruptures the cell wall of the microorganism, exposing the DNA/RNA from inside the cell, which reacts quickly with peracetic acid ensuring treated microorganisms cannot become resistant.


Currently, test strips are used to quantify the concentration of the disinfectant and to determine how effective the disinfectant will perform, however, test strips are impractical for day to day cleaning situations, as they take time and may not work if the instructions are not followed correctly.

Peracide uses a built-in colour system, where the colour of the solution is directly related to the performance of the solution. The correct dosage of peracetic acid is determined by a pink colour, the preparation of Peracide is performed through 4 simple steps:

  1. Firstly, the tablets are added to clean, clear water, preferably at 30°C-40°C.
  2. Secondly, a purple colour is produced which represents an activation period where an organic chemical reaction is taking place in the water to produce an active level of peracetic acid.
  3. This purple colour will change to pink which signals that the concentration of peracetic acid has reached a level where it will kill the widest spectrum of microorganisms, including spores, and the solution is ready to use.
  4. Finally, the solution will become colourless, which signals the concentration of peracetic acid has depleted to a level where it is less effective and should be disposed of and replaced with a fresh solution.

There are growing concerns over the ability of conventional disinfectants such as chlorine and quaternary based products to keep up with a new generation of Multidrug-Resistant Organisms (MROs) which are resistant to traditional antibiotics and some disinfectants.

This immunity creates the problem where no matter how much cleaning and disinfecting is scheduled, it won’t actually reduce the number of instances of outbreak. This could be incorrectly presumed to be the fault of the cleaning schedules, however, more likely, the problem is with the disinfectant product.

The persistent presence of Clostridium difficile spores, MRSA, Norovirus and other MRO pathogens in residential & care homes calls for a better product to improve the efficiency of the cleaning practice and improves disinfectant processes throughout the industry.

The problem faced cannot be controlled by chlorine products, quaternary ammonium products or other low-level disinfectants due to the need for a strong oxidising action to destroy persistent pathogens and spores that can stay in the environment for weeks to months, if not correctly sanitised.
